One of the questions we are often asked is why is it called - The Portland
Horn?
There are three reasons :
- The noise made by The Portland Horn is very similar to the sound made by the
fog horn on Portland Bill Lighthouse (the graphic on the left side of this web
page is the Portland Lighthouse).
- We have done all our testing using DG
Marines test tank on Portland
- The first large unit we made was lost at sea, in the Portland race (a nasty
stretch of water for small boats). When the unit was dropped over the side of
the boat, we had one end of the rope tied to the boat, unfortunately the other
end was not tied to The Portland Horn so we were left holding only a piece of
rope.
Portland Bill is actually an extremely impressive place to visit, there are
lots of unique flora, fauna and geological features to see as well as all the
marine activities that are available. The seaside town of Weymouth is linked via
a 3 mile causeway. So there is plenty to do and see.
The area is recognised as providing the best diving, wind surfing and
sea-angling in the UK.
Anyone thinking of visiting Portland and the rest of Dorset, should check out
the following web sites :
- West Dorset Internet - WDI is us as well,
and our site has lots of links to Dorset resources.
- Weymouth & Portland Borough Council
- Despite being called weymouth.gov.uk it is actually the address of Weymouth &
Portland, a local government organisation. This site has lots of information
specific to Weymouth and Portland.
- Portland Royal Visit - The site
being prepared for a royal visit to the Royal Manor of Portland.
